Report

Day 1 (21 September 2019)

Corinthian 2 (J Perdue 2) Annadale 2 (S Cox, R Burgess)

Corinthian managed a draw with Annadale in their EYHL debut at Whitechurch Park. Annadale went in front 5 minutes before the break as Simon Cox clipped in a nice finish to a move which started up to the right baseline before being flipped across to his path. Jack Perdue equalised for the newcomers just after halftime and put Corinthian ahead in the fourth quarter before Ryan Burgess netted a penalty corner with 6 minutes left to leave the match level at the finish [3]

YMCA 2 (T Brophy, H Carthy) Glenanne 3 (S Brownlow, S Boucher, B Venter)

Glenanne opened and finished the scoring at Wesley College to take the win. Brad Venter put them in front after they had the better start with a shot on his back foot, and they went two up just after halftime as Shannon Boucher netted a drag-flick. YMCA got a goal back as Tom Brophy (newly arrived from Cork) snuck the ball over the line and another new arrival from Munster (Waterford), Harry Carthy slammed the ball into the net from a crashing Grant Glutz pass into the area, with two minutes left. Glenanne had the final word, however, as Stephen Brownlow scored with a cracking strike with last touch of the game. [3]

Lisnagarvey 6 (J Lorimer 3, D Nelson, B Nelson, T Chambers) Pembroke Wanderers 0

Lisnagarvey made an impressive start to their defense of the Regulation Season Championship as they converted 3 of their 4 penalty corners, while Pembroke Wanderers managed none from the same number. Lisnargavey opened the scoring after 7 minutes as Dan Nelson smashed in a great shot from 10 metres out after a move that started down the left. His brother Ben doubled the lead in the 21st minute as he put a pass from Dan into the far corner of the net. Pembroke had a spell of pressure around the half-hour mark, and James Milliken produced three great saves in the Lisnagarvey goal. James Lorimer scored a penalty corner hat-trick between the 33rd and 51st minutes to put the game beyond doubt, and with 17 minutes to go Troy Chambers added a sixth from close range. [3]

Monkstown 2 (G Cole 2) Banbridge 2 (C Curry, B McCandless)

The game ebbed and flowed with goalmouth scrambles at both ends before the deadlock was broken in the 34th Minute as Jonny McKee created a chance wrapping the ball around the back post where Chris Curry was waiting to turn it in, putting Banbridge one up. Monkstown were level four minutes after the restart as Nick Dee provided a pass for Geoff Cole to fire into the backboard. He added a second in the 47th minute as he deflected a Davy Carson pass from the endline. Banbridge equalised with 13 munites to go as Bruce McCandless turned in a rebound from a David Fitzgerald save. Banbridge were soon down to nine men after two players were yellow carded but Monkstown failed to take advantage, and the game finished two-apiece. [3]

Three Rock Rovers 1 (B Walker) UCD 3 (C Empey, J Henry, G Sarratt)

UCD were impressive winners over reigning Champions Trophy winners Three Rock Rovers at Grange Road, Rathfarnham. The newly promoted side opening the account as Conor Empey netted from close range, one of 5 former Three Rock players in the UCD side. Three Rock Rovers equalised through Ben Walker in the second quarter, but the second half was all UCD as they pulled away. Jazze Henry scored a cracking reverse stick shot in the 38th minute, and with 24 munites left Guy Sarratt made it 3-1, scoring with a drag-flick shot into the roof of the net. UCD were in control after that, and the game ended 3-1 to the students. [3]

Day 2 (28 September 2019)

Annadale 1 (C Tremlett) Lisnagarvey 10 (D Nelson 3, A Williamson 3, B Nelson 2, T Chambers, O Kidd)

Lisnagarvey went 2-0 up within 6 minutes as they recorded their second massive win in as many weeks. Daniel Nelson got a deft touch to a Jonny Bell ball into the circle, the lead doubled by an Andy Williams penalty corner. It was 3-0 by the end of the first quarter, Tony Chambers scoring with a driving run and reverse-stick shot. Williamson got another penalty corner, and Ben Nelson made it 5-0 with a well worked move with his brother Daniel. Chris Tremlett got one back early in the second half, but it was all Lisnagarvey from then on, with a Williamson stroke leaving it 6-1 after 46 minutes, Ollie Kidd, and the Nelson brothers scored to make it 9-1, before Daniel Nelson got his treble from the flick-spot. [4]

Banbridge 2 (B McCandless, Ph Brown) Three Rock Rovers 5 (B Walker 2, H Morris, J Hosking, S Grace)

Twice Banbridge took the lead in the first quarter and twice Three Rock Rovers equalised, before Three Rock pulled away to win 5-2. Bruce McCandless put Banbridge one-up with a great turn and shot, but Rovers went went straight down the other end and equalised through Harry Morris tapping in at the far post just 30 seconds later. Philip Brown scored from the first penalty corner of the game after 16 minutes to put Banbridge 2-1 up, but again Three Rock levelled the game straight from the restart, Ben Walker driving the ball in from close range. Walker got his second on the half hour, putting Rovers into the lead for the first time, and with 11 minutes left it was 4-2, Jody Hosking scoring after a one-two with Ross Canning. Sam Grace made sure of the points for Three Rock with a score from a set-piece with a minute left on the clock. [4]

Pembroke Wanderers 6 (A Sothern 2, R McCollum 2, J Ryan, H Spain) Glenanne 1 (S Brownlow)

Pembroke scored three goals in the first nine minutes to put this game beyond doubt early on. Alan Sothern score within the first minute with a one-touch shot, and Rob McCollum scored two soon after to make it 3-0. Jack Ryan made it 4-0 at half-time, before Glenanne got one back through Stephen Brownlow’s penalty corner, before Harry Spzain made it five for Wanderers with his own penalty corner drag-flick. Alan Sothern scored, yet again from a penalty corner, right on the buzzer, to make it 6-1. [4]

UCD 6 (G Sarratt 2, A Meates 2, P Lynch, A Flynn) YMCA 4 (G Glutz 2, B O’Grady, T Brophy)

UCD had a comprehensive victory of YMCa, though they did let in a few late goals. YMCA scored first through Grant Glutz’s powerful turn and shot after four minutes, but UCD were 4-1 up within the quarter of an hour mark. Andrew Meates equalised for the students and a minute later Peter Lynch put them one-up. Meates added his second, and Guy Sarratt scored from a penalty corner to make it 4-1 after 14 minutes. in the 20th minute Glutz pulled one back, but Sarrat netted his second to make it 5-2 at the half. Alex Flynn scored soon after the restart to make it 6-2, before two late YMCA goals made the match seem closer than it was. Ben O’Grady & Tony Brophy scoring for YM. [4]

Corinthian 1 (I Stewart) Monkstown 1 (R Nichols)

Corinthian and Monkstown both drew their second game of the season from two games, as they traded penalty corners late in the game. The Reds were left for the second week running ruing a late concession to deny them a first win in the EY Hockey League. Corinthian led through Ian Stewart’s 53rd minute goal, but they could not hold on for the win as Rory Nichols equalised from a penalty corner with the last touch of the game. [4]

Day 3 (12 October 2019)

Annadale 2 (K Irwin, P Rose) Glenanne 3 (S Ronan, G Gibney, J McCormack)

Glenanne earned their second win of the season, as they came back from 2-0 to win in Strathdearn. The match started slowly with both teams failing to go ahead despite opportunities in the first quarter. The second quarter saw Annadale take the lead against the run of play with Kent Irwin’s close-range reverse stick finish. A solo run and finish by Patrick Roxse saw the hosts double the lead a few minutes later. Stu Ronan got one back straight away for the Tallaght side, as he rounded the keeper to slot home after a swift counter-attack. The Gens had a succession of penalty corners after that, but were unable to capitalise, however, after on penalty corner was initially broken down, Gavin Cibney finished neatly in the bottom corner to equalize. Both sides went on the attack and after a neat exchange on the right-baseline Ian Marron drove into the circle, and crossed for Johnny McCormack to finish, giving Glenanne a 3-2 victory. [5]

Lisnagarvey 6 (A Williamson 3, D Nelson, T Chambers, B Nelson) Three Rock Rovers 0

Lisnagarvey had another great performance to make it three huge wins from three, scoring a total of 22 goals so far in 2019-20. This was revenge for Lisnagarvey as Three Rock had beatn them in both the Champions Trophy and Irish Senior Cup Finals in 2018-19. The first half was scoreless, however, the second half was a goal-fest as Andy Williamson scored after 41 minutes from a penalty stroke. It was 2-0 after the third quarter as Troy Chambers scored from a Andy Edgar cross. Andy Williamson set up Daniel Nelson to make it 3-0 and netted two of his own after Ben Nelson’s reverse made it 4-0, as Lisnagarvey ran rampant in the fourth quarter. [5]

Banbridge 3 (O Magee 2, S Farson) UCD 4 (G Sarratt 2, C Empey, A Meates)

UCD stayed level with Lisnagarvey at the top of the table with a fine win at Banbridge. Conor Empey scored from a penalty-stroke to put them one-up, and Andy Meates added a secxond 20 minutes later after a great take and subsequent finish. Owen Magee pulled one back for Banbridge, and Sam Farson equalised after 38 minutes as he squeezed in a shot. UCD took the lead with 11 minutes to go as Guy Sarratt fired in a drag-flick, and he made it 4-2 a miinute later, which sealed the game despite a late Bann goal. [5]

Corinthian 3 (J Roberts 2, D Howard) YMCA 0

Corinthian got their first ever EY Hockey League win with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Rathfarnham neighbours YMCA. The Reds scored after 11 minutes, as Davy Howard scored from a penalty corner to put them 1-0 up. It was that way at the break. Two quick goals in the 40th and 41st minutes sent the Whitechurch side on their way to victory, both involving Stewart linking up with Johhny Roberts on the counter-attack. It stayed that way until the end, despite YMCA’s firece attack. [5]

Monkstown 3 (R Nichols 2, R Spencer) Pembroke Wanderers 2 (P Shanahan, A Sothern)

Ryan Spencer’s 54th minute goal gave Monkstown a 3-2 win over Pembroke Wanderers in a tightly contested match. Pembroke toom the fight to Monkstown in the early stages which was repelled, Rory Nichols dragged in a corner in the second quarter to put Monkstown 1-0 up, however, Pembroke equalized four minutes before half-time as Patrick Shanahan scored from a near-impossible angle. Town went back in front early in the second with another Nichols corner, but Pembroke again equalised soon after as Alan Sothern scored after confusion in the Monkstown circle. The winner came in the first minutes of the fourth quarter as Jason Lynch crossed into the back post for Spencer to deflect into the bottom corner. [5]
